What’s happening in Afghanistan?

The earthquake that has struck eastern and rural Afghanistan has caused devastation. 1,984 people have died, 3,617 people have been injured and 8,283 homes destroyed.

Hundreds of thousands of people – many of them women and children – need drinking water, food, shelter, blankets and cooking sets, critical medical supplies, and psychosocial support. Severe sanitation shortfalls have led to disease outbreaks. With additional rainfall and winter approaching, the risk of further humanitarian consequences heightens.

Colleagues and partners tell us that people have been severely impacted by the earthquake, causing significant financial losses such as livestock, farming tolls and shops. For many, this has increased debts prior to the earthquake. We have been told homes made of mud and wood collapsed as helicopters were sent in to evacuate the injured.

The earthquakes are still continuing. When we asked the affected people about their most urgent needs, they mentioned the lack of drinking water, medicine, non-food items and food. They do not have any money to purchase food.

How is Christian Aid responding?

Christian Aid is working closely with our networks to carry out assessments and to identify the extent of the damage and the risk to the most vulnerable, especially for women and girls. The remoteness of the areas hit by the quake makes the search and rescue even harder.

Our partner - OCHR (Organisation for Coordination of Humanitarian Relief) - maintains a strong operational presence in the East. They are responding in the Nurgal and Chawki districts of Kunar Province.

Thanks also to the generosity of our supporters, Christian Aid has raised almost £200,000 to date. Christian Aid has made an initial £50,000 available to OCHR to aid an emergency humanitarian response. Cash handouts will be able to buy food parcels, water kits, shelter, and other essential supplies based on people’s priorities  – to families who have lost everything

Over the coming weeks and months, we'll continue to stand by our partners and quake-affected communities, supporting their recovery and rebuilding lives.

Afghanistan is facing an ongoing crisis

This is a devasting blow, coming on top of the 2023 earthquake in Herat and the continuing dire economic situation. Even before this heartbreaking earthquake, Afghanistan was under immense strain.

Decades of conflict, drought, displacement, political turmoil and poverty have taken their toll on the Afghan people. In 2025, almost half of the population – some 22.9 million people – already required humanitarian assistance to survive.

Earlier this year, the abrupt freeze on US Agency for International Development (USAID) had already significantly affected aid delivery.

A prayer for Afghanistan

When the earth trembles and the mountains quake and the earth melts away…

Hold our hearts, God. Send our hands and feet to help however we can.

When the skies darken and the foundations falter and hell erupts underneath…

Hold our hearts, God. Send our hands and feet to help however we can.

When fear and grief shake foundations to the core and continue their devastation long after the world falls still…

Hold our hearts, God. Send our hands and feet to help however we can.

Our sisters and brothers, our family, in Afghanistan live this horror - now.

God of uncontrollable love and mercy, may we match your love in the way we respond - now.

Amen
