FAQs

What are the rules for door to door fundraising?

  • We will not knock on areas that are designated as Cold Call Control Zones (CCCZs)

  • Fundraisers must comply with the regulations and Codes of Practice set out by the Fundraising Regulator.

  • We will not knock on a door after 9pm as per the Fundraising Code of Practice.

  • Fundraisers may be on their own or in pairs.

  • Should you wish to prevent cold calling at your door you can order a No Cold Calling sticker online.

  • For more information about the Code of Fundraising Practice, please visit the Fundraising Regulator website.

Why do we use this as a method of fundraising?
This method of fundraising is a very efficient and cost-effective way of generating income and attracting new supporters for Christian Aid. Every donation made by a supporter is greatly valued and hugely vital and important to us in order to continue our work. Regular gifting is also a cost-effective way to donate as it allows us to keep our administrative costs to a minimum and the length of the commitment helps us to plan and budget effectively. Your regular donations provide us with the flexibility to utilize funds in order to respond in situations such as emergencies, crises and calamities quickly and efficiently.

How do I know that the fundraiser is legitimate? Should they have ID?

Door to Door Fundraisers will have a Christian Aid Tabard and/or a clearly displayed ID badge. They will also be in possession of Christian Aid Materials, and an electronic handheld device for registration purposes.

If you come across our collectors  in a shopping centre, a large store, train stations, tube stations, outside a local shop or at your door and would like to check that they are legitimate fundraisers for Christian Aid, please ask to see their identification and call us on 02075 232 493 (Monday to Friday, between 9am and 4:30pm). We will be able to verify the legitimacy of a fundraiser. You can also send your questions to info@christian-aid.org. Alternatively, we upload the locations we are fundraising in on our website (Please see current fundraising locations above).

The fundraiser at my door said they work for Gather, who are they?

All fundraisers are hired and managed by Gather, our third-party partner. Despite being employed by an external organisation, each fundraiser has undergone comprehensive training in the values of Christian Aid and will interact with the public accordingly. Gather employs skilled and experienced fundraisers who possess local knowledge, allowing them to offer valuable insights and expertise for running effective and successful fundraising campaigns. The fundraisers act as an extension of Christian Aid and are counted on to expand the work that we do and emphasise the important impact that your generous gift provides.

What do the fundraisers ask for?

The fundraisers ask members of the public to pledge regular donations to Christian Aid by recurring credit card donations and are not authorised to accept any other means of payments as a donation (cash, cheques etc.).

Fundraisers will ask for an initial donation payment taken instantly by credit or debit card and then instruct you to securely set up an ongoing monthly recurring payment by your preferred method of payment. They are also able to take one off donations by credit card if you are unable to commit to a regular monthly gift at this time. You will subsequently receive a phone call from our call center to verify your details of your gift, this will typically be instantly and when the fundraiser is nearby.

Do you have permission to fundraise in my area?

Before we fundraise in any area, we always get permission from the relevant local authority.

For England and Wales, Christian Aid has a National Exemption Order for house-to-house collection, see the list of National Exemption Order holders. This means we have been through a government process that looked at our approach to fundraising, considered a range of factors in assessing our eligibility, and based on that review approved us for house-to-house collection without needing to seek approvals from local authorities. For more information on the National Exemption Order process, see the National Exemption Order scheme

For Scotland and Northern Ireland, Christian Aid will have sought permission from the relevant local authority before fundraising in your area.

Under the House-to-House Collections Act 1993, businesses are counted as houses. As such, they are subject to the same rules as private residences. If you do not want fundraisers knocking on your door, please order a No Cold Calling sticker online.

Is this type of fundraising regulated?

The Fundraising Regulator regulates fundraising activities used by charities in the UK and enforces a Code of Fundraising Practice, which aims to make certain that peoples’ experience of this type of fundraising is positive.

At Christian Aid we closely monitor our street fundraising campaigns to ensure that representatives adhere to the regulations and Codes of Practice set out by the Fundraising Regulator.

Why does a fundraiser come back to my door multiple times?

In line with the Fundraising Regulator, fundraisers are allowed to return to the same property up to three times if the door has not been answered on the previous knocks. We appreciate that some people will not be available to talk or will not be in their home, so the three-knock policy is to maximise the number of conversations we are able to have.
