A journey of faith and purpose

For most, a father-son bonding activity might involve a weekend hike or a Sunday lunch. But for Geoff and Will, spending quality time together took on an extraordinary dimension.

The duo, from St Luke's Church near Poole, embarked on a mammoth 3,400-mile cycling journey that spanned eight countries.

This wasn't just any cycling trip; it was a 'reverse pilgrimage' designed to raise funds for Christian Aid to support those affected by the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.

Every pedal was a step towards helping those in need.

Cycling with a cause

Geoff and Will’s journey was more than just an adventure; it was a mission fueled by a deep sense of purpose.

Starting in Paphos, Cyprus, the pair cycled through Turkey, Greece, Macedonia, Albania, Italy, Switzerland, and France, covering 5,571km in just 58 days. The physical challenge was immense, but the spiritual significance of their route kept them motivated.

‘Every pedal was a step towards helping those in need,' said Geoff, a retired IT specialist. ‘Cycling through the earthquake-affected areas gave our journey a powerful purpose.’

The duo timed their journey to coincide with the first anniversary of the earthquakes, ensuring that their efforts would contribute to the ongoing recovery efforts in the region.

Bonding along the road

This epic journey was not just about raising money; it was about strengthening the bond between father and son.

Will demonstrated resilience and determination, especially when he sustained a minor injury towards the end of the trip. Despite having to cycle slowly for the remaining four days, effectively using just one leg, Will’s commitment to completing the challenge never wavered.

For Geoff, the journey was as much about spending meaningful time with his son as it was about the cause. ‘We were treated to fine weather, a little rain, and some challenging conditions, but it was the shared experience that made it truly special,’ Geoff reflected.

A global impact from local generosity

The funds raised by Geoff and Will’s journey are already making a difference. The earthquakes in Turkey and Syria left 58,000 people dead and millions more in desperate need of help. One year on, Christian Aid continues to support the recovery efforts, working alongside local partners to rebuild lives and communities.

From rebuilding schools and roads to providing grants for community-led recovery projects, Christian Aid’s work in the region is vital. The Sherwoods' fundraising efforts, which have so far reached nearly £5,000, contribute directly to these ongoing projects, bringing hope to those who have lost so much.

Cycling through the earthquake-affected areas gave our journey a powerful purpose.

Geoff and Will’s journey is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when generations come together in the spirit of compassion and faith. Their story is not just an inspiring tale of adventure; it’s a call to action for all of us.
